Doors of Return
Titled after the sign on the opposite side of the door my ancestors would have walked out leaving the continent for the last time. Never to return physically, but in spirit with me as I walked back through them in 2016. This multimedia piece is meant to profess a message of love and oneness through the idea that if we can see ourselves in others, we have no choice but to love each other. I consider myself a world citizen. While I call Texas my first home, I have also found home, and pieces of myself, in many places and people across the world. I am challenging each of us to find doors beyond what is familiar to us, doors that return us home to ourselves and bring us closer to recognizing our oneness as a species. There are bodies of psychological theories that ask us to consider: How can I not love myself if I see myself everywhere? I will limit the display in this exhibition to the most pertinent cultures, peoples, and lands that have contributed to making me a world citizen, an Earth citizen. There are still doors to unlock.
